Woodrow Wilson High School’s Earth and Gardening Club is all about providing an environmentally safe place for our community. Ms. Jo Frost has hosted the organization for almost four years, and is considered to be a ‘Master Gardener.’  The purpose of Earth and Gardening Club is to provide publicity towards gardening and environmental issues around the community. Since its creation, Earth and Gardening Club has had many successes towards its goal of planting. Quoting Frost, “We have sold a lot of Poinsettias in the last two years.” “We then used those sales to plant 21 native trees to support pollinators in the area. For example, Fothergilla, as well as Yellow-twig Dogwood, are some of many. We also have Clethra which is a native plant that attracts butterflies and is good for pollinators.” Along with planting, some favored activities of the group have included making recycled paper and selling a variety of flowers. The formation of Earth and Gardening Club was all thanks to Woodrow alumni, Frost recalls, “There was a student who knew I was a Master Gardener, and they wanted a gardening club. The first year it was just that, a gardening club. Then we combined along with the Earth club very shortly after. It’s just something I knew I would enjoy.” Currently, the club has taken on the task of providing new opportunities for both students and staff at Woodrow by finding ways of building a greenhouse onsite for student use. “Different ways students can support this club and its meaning include buying any recycled products they will be selling and volunteering to help plant greenery on the school grounds.” All students are welcome to join the Earth and Gardening Club at any given time. Meetings will be held every two weeks in D23.
