Woodrow Wilson High School’s PBIS department is excited to announce a new punch card incentive, inspired by the successful program at Oak Hill High School. These punch cards will be used to keep track of good deeds done by Woodrow’s students. Shanna Casto, a counselor at Woodrow, emphasizes the incentive’s significance, saying, “You get a punch for showcasing our SOAR method. For instance, if you’re a student who is always late to class and you show up on time, your teacher can award you a punch.” After a punch card is completed, students can redeem it for rewards from a gift box located in the cafeteria containing tardy passes, homework passes, and trinkets. “Starting next week we will have a gift box in the cafeteria for students who have filled out all 14 punches. Students can turn in their punch cards to receive a gift.” Furthermore, once a punch card is finished it will go into a monthly drawing. “If you are picked for that month, you and the teacher who gave you that first punch will get to pick from a larger collection of prizes.” In addition to these weekly and monthly rewards, there will be an end-of-the-year prize to award to a student.
All faculty and staff are allowed to participate in the giving of the punches. To verify the credibility of the punches, each faculty and staff will possess a unique puncher. “Whenever cards get turned in and if we see the same stamps being given, we’re able to go to that teacher with that stamp.” The overall goal of the punch cards is to make each student feel good about themselves. “We want to highlight you guys and the greatness that you are doing in our building.” The PBIS department at Woodrow hopes that this new incentive will spark questions as to why teachers have different stamps as well as encourage positive behaviors in students. If a student happens to lose their punch card, they will be given a new one once a month during their links class. This will ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in the incentive.
