This year, we have a close-knit community spreading their wings among the many diverse clubs of Woodrow Wilson High School (WWHS). The sewing club was started by the aspirations of student, Tanasha Moore. Having a passion for fashion, Moore wanted to extend her areas of interest in an organization that benefited all students. Upon approaching Ms. Courtney Vandall and Ms. Jessica Snow a spontaneous “yes” to the concept was given, with the condition of administrative approval.
Selection of sponsorship for the organization was made on a variety of factors. “We of course had to have someone that was crafty, having the ability to demonstrate a crafting activity to the class. Additionally we had to have someone that was well respected and well known-someone that everyone felt comfortable being around.” After much deliberation the selection of two candidates was finalized: Ms. Vandall, for virtues of craftsmanship and kindness, and Ms. Snow for intelligence and skill.”
Currently the club hosts 22 members and is accepting memberships. “We have new people walking in every meeting,” reports Moore. Unlike the name suggests, the club is not just about sewing. Artists of needle point, crochet, pencil, etc are also welcomed. Thus far the organization has crafted scrunchies, tie-dyed shirts. Lessons are student taught, and students follow along. Regardless of the result, the true fun of the club is in the learning process.
