Thomas Spencer, a senior at Woodrow Wilson High School, serves as the Student Body Vice President and has been a prominent member of the student government since his freshman year. “Throughout my four years on the student council, I have assisted in the gathering of 9,378 units of food, raised 8,776.96 dollars, collected 1,336 toys, brought the school spirit stick back to life, and contributed significantly to the Wet Land project. I am very honored to have been a part of this amazing program and hope to leave a legacy of excellence among my peers,” he shares
In addition to his role as Vice President, Thomas is a member of HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership), FCA (Fellowship of Christian athletes), Bible Club, National Honor Society, and Musical Theatre. Thomas first joined the Theatre department at Woodrow Wilson High School his sophomore year and has served as a sound technician for multiple events. In addition to participating in many organizations, Thomas is an Advanced Placement student. “The foundation of a strong academic life is organization. As a student I tend to start on the largest project and work down towards the small things. ” His leadership abilities have inspired 85 percent of Woodrow’s seniors to register to vote, allowing the school to earn the Jennings Randolph award. For this accomplishment, Thomas has been recognized by both local and state officials.
Spencer’s participation extends outside the walls of Woodrow Wilson High School, as he volunteers often at Raleigh General Hospital and is a participant of the Beckley Area Foundation SLYP (Susan Landis Youth Philanthropists) Program. Upon graduating Thomas plans to attend Marshall University and major in Health Administration and Marketing.
In reflection of his high school career Thomas admits that it was not exactly according to his plan. “When I first got to Woodrow I was not planning to get involved. However, the experiences and friends I have made along the way have proven that high school is not just about academics but about experience.”
The Eagle Dispatch and the staff of Woodrow Wilson High School share an immense feeling of pride, knowing that one of their students will always bring excellence.
