It is well known that America is suffering a mental health epidemic. Approximately more than one in five adults across the country have experienced or are experiencing some type of psychological disorder. But where there is darkness and depression there is also hope and light. For the community of Woodrow Wilson High School, this light is represented through their new mental health committee.
After the conclusion of a seminar located at Oak Hill High School, Woodrow’s counseling department and student, Alanna Penn knew they wanted to begin a new chapter of community outlook. Last school term the counseling department in association with Mrs. Lindsay Flanagan began searching for the top-of-the-nest students to apply as members. After conducting 44 interviews, a final selection of members was made. When chosen these students were divided into three different groups: marketing, planning, and media.
On October 29, the group officially hosted their first event- a drive-in movie premier. Concessions with an attached note of affirmation were given to paying participants of the event. This event not only served as an outlet to gain funds but, was a chance for the community to know they are not alone.
In the sense of community the group has built a social presence on a variety of networks. On these platforms they have promoted their events and posted inspiring affirmations.
