With the start of a new school year comes the reunion of teachers and their students. However, this term a new face enters the nest of Woodrow Wilson High School. Mrs. Sharon Garretson, of Beckley, has taken root within the room of D-insert numbers. An alumni of Independence, Garretson was a participant in a variety of extracurricular activities including, BETA club, National Honors Society, Student Council, the dance committee, and journalism.
Concluding graduation, she moved forward to Concord University with a major in history and education. After earning the role of Valedictorian, an application to become a teacher was immediately fulfilled.
This year will be Garretson second full year of teaching history at a high school. Why she always aspired to become an educator, several inspiration served in her favor.
Mr. Jonathan Moore, a former US History presenter, was of the most notable inspirations through out her journey.
Throughout her career, all levels of high school have had the pleasure of experiencing an open and collaborative teaching style. Currently she directs the freshman class of World Studies in addition to the subject of geography.
Before Garretson was a teacher, so was her family. Her father taught at Independence Middle School and her aunt taught as a teacher in Wyoming County.
The campus of the flying eagles extends a wing of fellowship to Garretson, hoping that she too can consider herself part of the nest.
