During the 1970s a series of car accidents took place on the day of Woodrow’s graduation. Students, excited about achieving their high school diplomas would obtain an altered state of mind and wreck. This series of redundant events inspired the creation of Project Graduation. Wanting to make a safe and friendly environment for both friends and family, the state of Maine hosted an inclusive moment for the graduating class. Soon after many states started the same tradition.
Woodrow Wilson High School will host their Project Graduation on May 25, at Beckley’s YMCA. Advisers of the event, Mrs. Julie Doyle and Mr. Travis Doyle have helped conduct fundraising for associated costs. Currently, they have reached 60% of their goal of $25,000. Events held include Bingo night, raffle tickets, and a 5K on April 20. Sponsors of the organization include Best Title Agency, Exit Elevation Reality, Beckley Board of Realtors, Mindy Harvey, and L&S Toyota.
During the event, food will be available along with an open swim, basketball, photo station, and a t-shirt signing. It is estimated that 60% of the graduating class will be in attendance or around 200 students.
