Carson Misch (junior) and Alexa Bieri (freshman), are going to states! Both Alexa and Carson won first place in the county-level competition for Young Writers. Alexa Bier won for the ninth and tenth-grade divisions, while Carson won for grades 11 through 12.
Inspired by a previous story she wrote in the sixth grade, Alexa’s essay features a missing person who saw a strange silhouette in the forest, unsure if it was a person. One difficulty she faced was staying within the proper word limit. However, since she had a good idea of what she was writing, she did not struggle very much. Nervous about attending the final competition, Alexa is proud of how far she has gotten.
With no anxiety, Carson Misch, the winner of the 11 and 12 grade division is very proud about attending. Carson’s story, “What Death Leaves Behind,” is about the life of an immortal man who is surrounded by nothing but clutter, both physical and psychological. Carson drew her inspiration from a set of building cards that Mrs. Underwood let her use. She drew four cards and used the prompts “immortal”, “ghost”, and “bookkeepers” for her story. The biggest challenge for Carson is the beginning of the story and building off an idea. However, Carson prevailed with the word limit of 1,000, as she did not have to overly worry about the plot of the story.
State winners will be chosen this month and will be publicly announced in May. The Eagle Dispatch congratulates both students for this title, wishing them well in the final selection.
