HOBY (Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership Foundation) is an organization dedicated to teaching and enabling students to be leaders. The official website of the group reads, “to inspire and develop our global community of youth and volunteers to a life dedicated to leadership, service, and innovation.” Though student-led, the club’s adviser, Mrs. MeriBeth Underwood, has observed the growth of the organization since 2016. A critical key role of the group, student-based leadership is fulfilled by Maggie Adkins, as HOBY president. Summer Seminars are held every year, where sophomores are chosen to represent Woodrow Wilson High School. The seminar is three to four days, consisting of personal, group, and service leadership education and experiences. Larna Cormack, Campbell Erwin, Kacie Fraley, and Evelyn Hartman are the 2024 attendees for this year’s seminar. These students are nominated and chosen by the faculty. Campbell Erwin states that she is, “excited to be chosen for the opportunity and the experience of HOBY on a higher level.” Meetings are held on Thursdays every other week in D-4. HOBY is open to any students in grades 9-12. More information on joining HOBY can be found with Mrs. Underwood or Mrs. Hampton.
