Since 1997, Woodrow Wilson High School’s Junior Reserves Officer Training Corps (JROTC) has brought the school a great amount of prestige. Led by Major Carpenter the team has collected over 150 trophies in the previous five years. This year they won first place at the West Virginia Air National Guard Fit Drill Competition as well as first in state.
While focusing on the present the group also honors the past, visiting the Air Force Museum in Washington, D.C. In addition to striving for excellence Major has a deep passion for connecting with students on a personal level. “It can be your home, it is a lot of work we hold our cadets to a higher standard but it is a lot of fun it’s like a home.”
Fate Williams a third year Cadet Major adds to this statement, “it can be scary to walk into something knowing nothing about it. But, it is really is one of the best decisions I know that I made. I’ve never been in such a close knit environment. You gain not only a team but also a family and have so many opportunities to learn to lead but also follow.”
