The Woodrow Wilson High School Girls’ Soccer team dominated at sectionals and is now headed for regionals! The Lady Flying Eagles played skillfully, and it paid off with a 3-0 win over Oak Hill for the Class AAA Region 3, Section 2 title. They now face George Washington High School of Charleston for the Region 3 title at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Youth Sports Complex on Tuesday, October 25 at 7:30 p.m.

The Flying Eagles girls ended their regular season with 14 wins, 3 ties, and 5 losses. Coach Julie Agnor said “This season we dropped at first, then we came right back up. The girls really pulled it together and worked as a true team. We are probably one of the strongest passing teams in the state.” What Coach Agnor is most proud of is the way her girls won. “We have gotten comments from other coaches about how unselfish they play, giving the ball to one another and letting whoever has the best shot, make it.” In addition to exemplary teamwork, there were those players who deserve a shout out for their cumulative goals. Ama Ackonannan and Sophie Hall both scored 19 goals, with 17 goals for the season going to Mia Wooten. Coach Agnor says the team is in prime position to beat George Washington, “If they continue to work together.”

Maddy Lanna, a senior player, was very happy to talk about the hard work and effort the team has consistently offered. “The team communicated well on and off the field, creating a great dynamic.” Their strategies paid off in the Sectional win, employing skills they practiced and perfected throughout the season. Lanna expressed that “if they can’t touch the ball, they can’t win, they can’t score” —  a mantra firmly-held that has led the team to so many victories.
